The Final Build
This patch for Lords of Illic is a juicy one. I have been working on a lot of noticeable changes to the game including new art, new controls and bug fixes. This will, sadly, have to be the last version of Lords of Illic (barring any additional bug fix patches). It is not that I want to stop working on Illic. If anything I am starting to feel more and more motivated but…
I am sure you’ve heard the news - Unity is on a path to destroying itself by trying to charge developers for their customers installing Unity-based applications on their machines. Now Lords of Illic is 100% a free game and hardly popular enough to face any charges but that is not the point. Charging developers for customers installing their game is crazy. Even forgetting about possible exploits, it is just crazy. It’s a hard to track metric which adds a tax to the developer when they may not be even making money off that user. Now I don’t actually think money is that important. In my humble opinion I think you just need to make a living, which is exactly why this is so terrible. It is not exactly easy to make a living from making games at the best of times. I am not making a living off game development but I like to dream I could make it one day. I have been trying to make a library in Unity for similar turn-based strategy games in the hope I could prototype quickly and maybe even one day sell a game or two.
I could try to remake Lords of Illic from scratch, but I think this is the chance for me to start something new. It seems like a shame since Lords of Illic was finally coming together, but then again it is certainly better than if this happened at the start of the year when the game was broken. I guess it is time to start over game development in another engine from zero. Too bad I don’t have a blue-haired maid to cheer me on.
